Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 35 weeks + 3 days
How big is baby: The Bump says coconut, Babycenter says honeydew melon and What to Expect says large cantaloupe (17.2-22in inches long and 4.2-6 pounds)
Total weight gain: A lot. Haha. About 23 lbs
Maternity clothes: Yep, yep, yep!! My belly is huge now.
Sleep: I've been sleeping a little better the last few nights, last night excluded. Haven't been getting up as much to use the bathroom which is great. We also got a soft, beautiful new duvet and sheet set for Christmas which makes the bed feel like a big fluffy cloud - heaven!
Best moment of the week: A wonderful family Christmas.
Food cravings: Junk! All the holiday treats...chocolate, cookies, cinnamon rolls, chocolate, candy, cheese popcorn, chocolate, haha.
Food aversions: Nothing...unfortunately!
Symptoms: Bad back pain for about a week which has not been fun. Swelling when I don't drink enough water/put my feet up enough and difficulty bending and picking things up. Plus the usual suspects.
Movement: Still moving, moving but I'm anxious to know how she is positioned. I can't tell at all.
Gender: Girly girl
What I’m looking forward to: Finishing up our shopping for nursery and baby. Going this weekend to pick up everything else we need.
What I miss: Being able to pick things up off the floor and my back not hurting.
Next appt: December 30, 2013

I'm excited to welcome our little girl next month, but reality is starting to sink in as well. This week I kept having moments of panic that we are going to have our baby here in mere weeks and I feel super unprepared. I know that it's just nerves and first time mom worries though. We've done the classes, the nursery is almost complete, we've got books, dvd's, internet (yay youtube tutorials!) and most important of all, her grandparents who've done this before and are so excited to help. You can never be 100% prepared and a lot of it we will learn as we go, I keep reminding myself of that. I feel pretty prepared for the birth itself at least! I know it'll all probably go out the window once I'm actually in labor though ;)

We celebrated our last Christmas as a couple and will soon be celebrating the new year for the last time as just a couple. We'll be toasting (with something nonalcoholic naturally) a year of big changes and getting ready to enter a wonderful 2014 which will see us celebrate the birth of our first child and five years of marriage - I can't wait!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 34 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says butternut squash, Babycenter and What to Expect say cantaloupe (17.2-22in inches long and 4.2-5.5 pounds)
Total weight gain: About 20lbs (will get an official weight tomorrow)
Maternity clothes: Getting a bit bored with my maternity wardrobe! Pretty much limited to only the maternity clothes I've got and a few regular tops. I want to shop but there's not much point with only 6+/- weeks left.
Sleep: Having good (ish) nights and bad nights. Sometimes I manage a good night (for me) and can sleep solidly in 2-3 hour chunks. Other nights, like Sunday, I can't sleep at all and/or wake up constantly from a combination of needing to pee and terrible hip pain. Needless to say, I was not so happy Monday morning.
Best moment of the week: Finishing baby class and feeling more confident and prepared.
Food cravings: Chocolate chip cookies and soda, but I've resisted!
Food aversions: Nothing at the moment.
Symptoms: Belly is big!! My belly button hasn't popped out and I feel like it probably won't, which is fine with me. Still a lot of hip pain at night, waddling more and all the usual symptoms. Still noticing more water retention but I'm trying to get up and move more at work and my rings still fit (barely) so I'm hoping it just doesn't get any worse at least until the last week or two.
Movement: Lots and all over in my belly. I have no idea what direction this little lady is in or if I'm being kicked or punched.
Gender: Lovely little lady
What I’m looking forward to: Our appointment tomorrow! Can't wait to hear her heartbeat again and get everything checked out.
What I miss: Sleep!
Next appt: December 18, 2013 (tomorrow!)

We finished our baby classes on Saturday, woo-hoo! One thing I found amusing was when the instructor felt the need to tell the class that when she was talking about baby sleeping through the night, she meant 5 continuous hours. There were many shocked and exasperated faces that it was only 5 hours straight but that sounded wonderful to me! My quality and duration of sleep has been so poor lately, being able to sleep for 5 straight hours sounds AMAZING! I've been trying to stay positive about my poor sleep by thinking of it as training my body for the newborn weeks.

Back to baby class though, I'm feeling pretty positive and confident (as much as I can be!) about my plans for labor. Neil and I are on the same page and he knows how I would like to do things. We haven't started packing any bags for the hospital yet or anything like that, but I feel like we are pretty well prepared now. We have a plan (although I still need to write it out), we know our options, we know what issues we might run into and are prepared to do whatever we need to do to have a healthy baby (and mom) so I feel like we are in a good place as we get closer and closer to the big day!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 33 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says Durian fruit, Babycenter and What to Expect say Pineapple (17.2-19in inches long and 4.2-4.9 pounds)
Total weight gain: Didn't weigh this week
Maternity clothes: Yes, but nothing new since I've only got 49 +/- days to go!
Sleep: A little less pain the past few days which has helped a bit, but still not sleeping well. Struggling with a bit of insomnia also.
Best moment of the week: Last week was wonderful! Too many best moments to pick just one. I loved my beautiful baby shower, my surprise work shower and our baby class.
Food cravings: Umm...I ate a bagel for breakfast yesterday and today if that tells you anything. Also fruit!
Food aversions: Nothing really at the moment, I'm still avoiding very spicy foods.
Symptoms: Pretty much the same ones I've been having. Feeling pretty big and bulky at the moment so I'm having a harder time putting my shoes on and just getting around day to day. Also starting to get some swelling in my fingers so my rings are getting a little tight. I hope I won't get to the point that I can't wear them though!
Movement: Little Isla is still a mover and shaker!
Gender: Girl, girl, girl
What I’m looking forward to: The second half of our baby class this Saturday. We'll be learning more about labor options, breastfeeding and postpartum care.
What I miss: Sleep and range of movement
Next appt: December 18, 2013

I can't believe how quickly things seem to be moving along! We have the nursery nearly completed and thanks to our wonderful friends and family who showered us with so many generous gifts we have a great stock of diapers to get us started, lots of adorable clothes, toys, swings and soft cuddly blankets. We have a lot of what we need which is great and a stress reliever. Next weekend we finish birth class and I'm starting to feel like we'll be as prepared as we can be when our little lady arrives. We're getting there!

Baby Shower(s)!

Isla and I were showered with a ton of love this past weekend!

On Friday, my colleagues and our student employees surprised me with an adorable little baby shower. It was completely unexpected and so sweet! They transformed the conference room with perfect pink handmade decorations and had plenty of my greatest craving (bagels!) on hand as well as yummy cupcakes, which I can never say no to! Isla got her first tiny pink UP tee shirt and the first book to start her library.

On Sunday the love continued with a shower hosted by Monica and Amy, held at my parents' house. Gorgeous handmade decorations, delicious snacks and sweets and lots of love greeted us. We munched on steak bites, meatballs, tea sandwiches (cucumber/cream cheese and egg salad), cheesy artichoke dip, fruit salad and greek herb salad. Those who could partake sipped on mimosas and wine, while the rest of us enjoyed sparkling juices and cider. There was so much warmth and joy! We played a fun celebrity baby name game, which Mom and I tied on as the winners! Think we need to stop reading so much US Weekly... After we opened our gifts, which were all incredibly thoughtful and adorable, we had some fantastic desserts. Monica made the most delicious cupcakes, Spiced Apple Pie and Mexican Hot Chocolate. They also had a beautiful cake and cookies.

Everything was perfect and I loved every minute! I am so grateful for the kindness and love of my amazing, friends, family and colleagues. Isla and I are so lucky to have such supportive and wonderful people in our lives!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 32 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says Squash, Babycenter says Jicama and What to Expect says Honeydew melon (16.7-19in inches long and 3.75-4.5 pounds)
Total weight gain: About +15
Maternity clothes: Pretty much only maternity clothes. I've reached the stage where I look like I am smuggling a basketball under all my clothes.
Sleep: I haven't been sleeping well, too much hip pain and needing to pee. I wake up almost every hour (if not every hour) with the hip I have been sleeping on aching terribly. Once I wake up from that I pretty much always feel like I have to pee so I get up and then switch to the other hip until inevitably that one starts to ache and then the cycle repeats itself. All. Night. Long. I just keep reminding myself, only 8-ish more weeks!
Best moment of the week: Nothing too exciting this week, lots of movement from little girl and the chair for the nursery has been assembled by my wonderful hubby!
Food cravings: Love me some bagels!
Food aversions: Super spicy food
Symptoms: Lots of hip pain, some swelling in my ankles and hands. No energy.
Movement: Quite a bit of movement, but I think she's running out of space! I feel her wiggling around and shifting but it's a bit more muffled (fewer big ka-pow style karate kicks, more squirming) but according to the books that's to be expected at this stage.
Gender: Little Miss
What I’m looking forward to: A busy (but fun) weekend! Birth class on Saturday and baby shower on Sunday!
What I miss: Sleep! I look forward to pain free slumber (at some point) in the future :)
Next appt: December 18, 2013

Two months/eight weeks/56 days to go! I can't believe I am eight months pregnant now. It still blows me away that there is a real living, breathing baby with hair and fingernails that is half me and half Neil, growing inside me. And what more, she will be HERE, on the outside, in just weeks. Our lives will change forever and we'll officially be a family for the rest of them. It's exciting and terrifying and overwhelming all at once. Sometimes it feels so natural to be pregnant and have a little wiggling person inside me and other times it feels like a dream. I'm trying to write Isla a few letters with my thoughts and emotions as the day we get to meet her draws nearer. I hope that some day when she's older she will enjoy reading them.

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 31 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says Pineapple , Babycenter says Coconut and What to Expect says Head of Lettuce (16-19in inches long and 2.9-3.9 pounds)
Total weight gain: Didn't weigh this week but +14 lbs officially from the doctor last week.
Maternity clothes: Ordered a pair of maternity tights and a two-pack of nursing tops on super sale from H&M. I was tempted to buy more but I'm going to try and make do with what I have until the end now. Only 63-ish days to go!!
Sleep: I've noticed my energy (and motivation) are starting to seriously lack. I'm getting more and more tired, which isn't helped by not sleeping all that well, but I try to supplement with naps on the weekend.
Best moment of the week: Finally got a chair for the nursery ordered!
Food cravings: Bagels and cream cheese still. We had to go out and get a half dozen just for me from Einstein Bros this past weekend and I polished off the last one this morning :-O Now I'm looking forward to my Thanksgiving dinner, more so this year than any year I can remember!
Food aversions: Can't think of anything in particular at the moment.
Symptoms: The same ones I've been having plus a bit of swelling in my (can)ankles. My feet and ankles start out nice and normal but the past few days/week I have noticed they are starting to swell by the end of the day which is not terribly attractive. I'm trying to walk around more during the day and hopefully that will help.
Movement: As I type!
Gender: Wee lass ;)
What I’m looking forward to: My baby shower! Next weekend (not this upcoming, but the weekend after) we have our birth class on Saturday and then my baby shower on Sunday - busy, busy! I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to what's going to happen at the shower so I'm really excited!
What I miss: My energy and motivation! I have zero motivation to do most things, cooking, shopping (other than online), getting dressed up. Just feeling big and tired lately.
Next appt: December 18, 2013

This Thanksgiving I am so very thankful for my wonderful husband and the beautiful little baby of ours growing in my belly. We are very, very lucky to have our own home, two safe cars, good jobs, food on the table, our families and our health. We have so much to be thankful for and I can't wait to enjoy the holiday celebrating all that we are grateful for. Thanksgiving next year we will have transitioned from a couple to a family and while we most certainly have changes (and challenges) ahead of us, I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 30 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says cucumber (length?), Babycenter says head of cabbage and What to Expect says head of lettuce (15.7-17in inches long and 2.9-3.8 pounds)
Total weight gain: +14 lbs (officially from the doctor this morning)
Maternity clothes: No new ones, but trying to mix and match new outfits out of what I have. Adding more accessories and switching up my shoes to keep things interesting!
Sleep: No real changes this week. Pretty tired and getting up 2-4 times a night on average doesn't help, but still doing okay.
Best moment of the week: Getting a ton of work done on the nursery! The crib and changing table are built, as is the stroller (thank you daddy for building everything!!). We still have a little more decorating to do but things are really coming along! Also, mommy and baby had a check up this morning and everything is looking great.
Food cravings: Bagels and cream cheese. After craving (and getting sick on them) in the first trimester I kind of couldn't stand them in the second tri, but we've now come full circle! haha. Also soda.
Food aversions: Really spicy things, some meat
Symptoms: Thought I saw a little stretch mark so I've been slathering on the cocoa butter, but looking for it again today I think it was just a crease from the bedsheets while I slept, phew! Knock on wood! Other than that, still pelvic pain (midwife recommended a support band if it gets worse) and needing to pee all-the-time. Little achy in my lower back and tailbone too, just getting to the end and everything starts to fall apart ;)
Movement: Yep!! Baby girl moves every day but she definitely has days where she is just going, going, going and then other days that are quieter. I'm still getting used to her patterns but I love feeling her move. When I settle in to bed and lay down, I feel her kick and shift quite a bit as she settles in too - so cute.
Gender: A lovely, little girl
What I’m looking forward to: Thanksgiving! (hehe) and starting our birth classes on December 7th.
What I miss: Coffee lately
Next appt: December 18, 2013

The nursery is really coming along and making things feel so real! I still need to order a couple things and do a little more decorating, but her beautiful room is going to be ready and waiting for her soon! I've been trying to keep up on my reading and will start working on our birth plan soon, can't believe that as of today her due date is only 70 days away!!

My 100th post!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 29 weeks + 1 day
How big is baby: The Bump says acorn squash, Babycenter and What to Expect say butternut squash (15.2-17in inches long and 2.5-3.1 pounds)
Total weight gain: +13 lbs I think...
Maternity clothes: No new ones but I went through my closet and dug out anything that would work as maternity and put all the other clothes away.
Sleep: Not great, but mostly due to the cold I've come down with, not because of the pregnancy.
Best moment of the week: The hospital tour was wonderful and very informative. It was a great opportunity to learn a lot about what's going to happen and it was great for Neil to learn and see what will go on. I've been researching like crazy to learn all about labor and delivery, but Neil hasn't learned too much...yet! Our birth classes start December 7th :)
Food cravings: Since I've been sick the past few days I've been wanting soup, bagels and cream cheese and fresh fruit and veggies.
Food aversions: Nothing new, spicy food still.
Symptoms: Again nothing new to report. Still getting bigger and bigger by the day. Pelvic pain but it's not getting any worse and some days are a lot better.
Movement: On and off, all day (and night) long :)
Gender: A beautiful little girl
What I’m looking forward to: Our next check up and starting birth class (also, Thanksgiving hehe)
What I miss: Soda
Next appt: November 19, 2013

We went to IKEA right after our hospital tour (and before I became bedridden with an awful cold for two days) and picked up the dresser/changing table, a lamp, shelves and some other decorations for the nursery. Isla's crib arrives on Thursday and aside from the closet, the room is fully painted. We just need to order the wall decals, assemble the furniture and make a final decision on a chair and the nursery will be nearly done!! There is still some decorating and diy-ing to be done, but everything is coming together for our little girl's room which is so exciting!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 28 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump and Babycenter say eggplant and What to Expect says small cabbage (14.8-17in inches long and 2-2.9 pounds)
Total weight gain: +12lbs according to my official weigh-in two weeks ago.
Maternity clothes: No new ones, don't know how I would get by without maternity pants though
Sleep: Definitely more interrupted and more uncomfortable since my hips really start to ache if I sleep on one side for too long. My pelvis is still bothering me and probably will through the end of the pregnancy from what I've read.
Best moment of the week: Officially crossing into the third trimester!! Only 12 weeks to go - eek! ;)
Food cravings: Sweets and comfort foods (biscuits and gravy, lasagna, basically anything starchy and heavy)
Food aversions: Spicy food
Symptoms: Hip and pelvic pain, but otherwise feeling pretty good. Had a fabulous massage (my first ever professional massage!) on Sunday that eased a lot of tension in my muscles and was so relaxing.
Movement: All the time, stronger and stronger with each passing week
Gender: Mommy and Daddy's little princess ;)
What I’m looking forward to: Our birth tour this weekend! We are going to deliver at an almost brand new hospital and got to do a full hospital tour before they opened in August but on Sunday we go for our official birth tour and get to learn all about the labor and delivery department!
What I miss: Mobility and soda haha
Next appt: November 19, 2013

I can't believe our little girl will be joining us in only three short months (potentially less!) it seems like it is flying by now and I'm not ready! I know many mom's-to-be at this stage are ready to be done being pregnant and meet their babies but I feel like I need every moment of this third trimester to get ready, the panic is setting in about how much we've got left to do! I definitely feel my nesting instinct kicking in and wasn't sure when or if it would since I've never been the tidiest person (close friends and family will laugh at that!) and I've always been the person to procrastinate. Dirty dishes in the sink? Eh, they can wait until tomorrow. Laundry piling up? I still have clean stuff in the closet, no rush. I might not have done a complete 180 overnight, but I'm definitely feeling the urge to organize.
I feel like I have been so focused the past seven months on just having a healthy pregnancy, now that we are reaching the end I can't believe that what I have been working towards and the little person growing inside me are double digit days away. I'm know I'm not the only mother-to-be who has experienced these feelings and that everything will come together, but sometimes I just wish time would slow down a bit! No doubt it will when I get to be 37+ weeks pregnant and then I'm sure I will be ready to have this baby out, ready or not haha!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 27 weeks + 1 day
How big is baby: The Bump says rutabaga, Babycenter and What to Expect say head of cauliflower (anywhere from about 13.6-16in inches long and 1.5-2.5 pounds)
Total weight gain: +12lbs according to my official weigh-in last week.
Maternity clothes: No new clothes but I have been window shopping online.
Sleep: Struggling a little bit lately because my hips start to hurt if I lay on one side for too long. When I roll over though my pelvis aches so it's been a little uncomfortable.
Best moment of the week: Well technically this happened in between last week and this week, but my gestational diabetes test came back clear! Phew! Isla's heartbeat sounded great, my blood pressure, pulse and weight gain are all right where they should be. Aside from a few aches and pains, everything is going great at the moment (knock on wood) so while it's not really a moment, that's the best thing about right now.
Food cravings: It varies day by day, still predominantly carbs and fruit.
Food aversions: Still just really spicy food that I struggle with at the moment.
Symptoms: Started getting aches in my pelvis. My back has been getting achy for months but now I'm struggling with my pelvis too. According to my bff (google) it's due to an increase in the hormone relaxin which loosens everything up down there to make labor/delivery easier. Some people produce a little too much and it can cause achy joints. It's also what makes us preggos do the ever attractive waddle.
Movement: Lots! Pretty much anytime I'm sitting or laying quietly I can feel little girl moving around. Sometimes they feel like big intentional movements, other times it is just wiggles. I can sometimes feel her move when I am standing or moving around too, but it's not nearly as noticeable.
Gender: It's a girl!
What I’m looking forward to: Meeting our little girl! I can't believe it's only 90 days until our due date and she could be here even sooner than that! The third trimester officially starts next Tuesday...eeee!
What I miss: Soda :( I know I shouldn't miss it but I do. I indulge occasionally but nothing with caffeine or artificial sweeteners so sometimes I just really, really want an icy cold diet coke! Also, I saw a question posted on a pregnancy message board about the first thing(s) you want to eat after giving birth and it got me thinking about what I've been missing. Honestly, there wasn't anything (aside from soda or regular coffee maybe) that instantly came to mind. A lot of people said sushi and margaritas. While I do miss sushi, I've always enjoyed veggie rolls so I've been able to satisfy my cravings and aside from the occasional night when I would really love a glass of cider, I haven't missed alcohol. Sure it would be nice to indulge in a cocktail or glass of cider every now and again, but it hasn't really been on my mind much. I think I just look forward to not having to worry so much. Right now I feel paranoid about everything that I eat. I research anything new online before I eat it and I struggle with dining out because I never know how they are preparing things. A lot of people don't worry as much and eat what they want, but I just haven't been comfortable with the risk. It's a only a few months out of your whole life, I would rather do everything I can to make sure I don't put my baby at risk. So I would say post-pregnancy I just look forward to not having to quiz waiters at restaurants! Maybe a nice medium steak as well ;)

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 26 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says head of lettuce, Babycenter says scallion and What to Expect says cucumber (about 13.6-15in inches long and 1.5-2.2 pounds)
Total weight gain: About 11 lbs, will have an official number after appointment tomorrow.
Maternity clothes: No new ones, but have been enjoying wearing the new sweaters I got.
Sleep: About the same, starting to struggle a little bit to find a comfortable position for my belly.
Best moment of the week: Last Friday after dinner Isla put on her biggest show yet. Neil could feel tons of movement and my belly was shaking and wobbling like crazy. Our little girl must have enjoyed her dinner, she was having a little pizza party in mama's tummy! Also, getting into double digits!! 98 days to go!!
Food cravings: Bacon (haha) and candy...FYI Kaiser, it's not nice to make a pregnant girl take her glucose tolerance test the week before Halloween! ;)
Food aversions: Just very spicy food
Symptoms: Not many new ones, feeling a little more uncomfortable at the end of the day. Achy back and feet.
Movement: Yes! Our little mover and shaker is big and strong enough that her daddy can feel her kicks now and we can both watch my belly wiggle and shake when she's feeling particularly active.
Gender: Baby girl
What I’m looking forward to: Hearing little one's heartbeat tomorrow and decorating her nursery. We ordered her crib yesterday!
What I miss: Not much, just not being so achy in the evenings I guess.
Next appt: Tomorrrow! October 23, 2013

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 25 weeks +1 day
How big is baby: The Bump says cauliflower, Babycenter says rutabaga and What to Expect doesn't list a size this week (about 13.5+ inches long and 1.5+ pounds)
Total weight gain: About 10 lbs
Maternity clothes: All maternity pants and mostly maternity tops, picked up a few new maternity sweaters last week to get me through the winter and hopefully (fingers crossed) I'll be able to get through the rest of my pregnancy without having to buy any more clothes!
Sleep: Still back and forth, better some nights and worse others. Overall still sleeping pretty well though and not too uncomfortable yet. The little girl likes to kick (only small kicks still) as I try to fall asleep.
Best moment of the week: Feeling Isla so much more. Her kicks still feel small and gentle, but I am noticing them much more frequently.
Food cravings: Still carbs, carbs, carbs. Trying to be good and eat a balanced diet but would love to just eat bread and fruit all day.
Food aversions: Jalapenos
Symptoms: Getting achy more easily, particularly my back. Also, I found this strange, but bleeding a lot when I get any little cut. I had a tiny, literally sesame seed sized scab that I absentmindedly scratched off and it started dripping blood! From a quick google search, it sounds like I'm not the only pregnant woman to experience this. A lot of people say it's because of the increased blood volume you have while pregnant. Freaked me out for a minute though!
Movement: Yes, seems like more and more each day and I love it!
Gender: Baby girl
What I’m looking forward to: Hearing Isla's heartbeat again next week at my appointment and getting my glucose test out of the way, hopefully no problems with it!!
What I miss: Not getting an achy back after a day of just normal activity, think my first professional massage might be in the near future!
Next appt: October 23, 2013

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 24 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says cantaloupe, Babycenter says ear of corn and What to Expect doesn't list a size this week (about 12 inches long and 1.2-1.5 pounds)
Total weight gain: I think about 9-10 lbs
Maternity clothes: All maternity pants and mostly maternity tops
Sleep: Hit and miss. Some nights I sleep pretty well and others not so much. I've started waking up more in the middle of the night and struggling to get back to sleep. Crazy pregnancy dreams and having to pee all the time don't help much either.
Best moment of the week: Baby crosses the 50% survival rate if born during this week. There is nothing to indicate that I will go into labor ANYTIME soon, but it's amazing knowing just how big and strong she is getting. That said, she still has a long way to go so please keep cooking inside mama's belly little Isla.
Food cravings: Lots of carbs, cold fresh fruit (melon, pineapple, etc.)
Food aversions: Jalapenos :( I love them, but they seem to be the only thing still making me really queasy. Hubby brought home some delicious jalapeno cheese bread which I would normally love and I dug in to a piece only to throw up minutes later. Didn't know if it was just morning sickness so I had jalapenos on my veggie subway the other day and started feeling sick again. I picked all the rest of them off and think I will have to retire them for the next 4 months sadly. Hopefully Isla will like spicy food like her mommy and daddy!
Symptoms: Feeling big, the bump is certainly noticeable! Achy back, hungry all the time, etc. etc.
Movement: Yes! I'm enjoying every kick :)
Gender: Little lady
What I’m looking forward to: Continuing to feel more and more movement, finishing the nursery, getting to the third trimester, I could go on and on.
What I miss: Jalapenos (haha) and my normal range of movement. I feel like an upside down turtle when I try to get out of bed in the morning. It's also getting harder to bend over and pick things up.

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 22.5 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says papaya, Babycenter says spaghetti squash and What to Expect says small doll (11 inches long and 1 pound)
Total weight gain:  Forgot to check this week, last week it was +9 lbs
Maternity clothes: Mostly maternity aside from a few tops and some leggings
Sleep: Pretty good, not so great last night but overall pretty good
Best moment of the week: Starting to feel quite a bit of movement!
Food cravings: Still carbs, carbs, carbs...bread, pasta, etc.
Food aversions: Nothing new
Symptoms: A bit achy this week
Movement: Yes! I love it!
Gender: Sweet little girl
What I’m looking forward to: Isla's first kicks that are strong enough for Neil to feel.
What I miss: Not a whole lot, my old clothes maybe!

Weekly Pregnancy Update

I have been really bad and neglected my updates for several weeks now which I regret. I can't wait to look back on these posts to remember everything I was experiencing. That said, it can be hard to keep up with things when pregnant and I have to learn to take it easy on myself when not everything gets done.

How far along: 21 weeks! Over halfway there!
How big is baby: The Bump says pomegranate, Babycenter says carrot and What to Expect says large banana (10.5 inches long and 12oz)
Total weight gain:  +9 lbs (official weight gain measured at the doctor on Monday)
Maternity clothes: All maternity bottoms, except one skirt and about 75% maternity tops, 25% regular
Sleep: Sleeping pretty well at the moment. Getting some cramps in calves at night though. I bought a maternity pillow (snoogle) a few weeks ago and it has been a wonderful investment! Makes it so much easier to sleep comfortably.
Best moment of the week: Heard the little one's heartbeat again on Monday and everything is looking good. Mom and baby are doing great so far :)
Food cravings: Carbs! Fresh fruit and pretzels
Food aversions: None at the moment really
Symptoms: Morning sickness is pretty much gone (hooray!), calf cramps, achy back and a little swelling in my feet. Overall though, feeling pretty good and thankful for that!
Movement: Yes!! Around 19 weeks I started to feel some sporadic movement, mostly when sitting down after eating, and it has continued to get more frequent and pronounced! I'm looking forward to bigger and more frequent kicks (probably won't say that forever haha) as its very reassuring. Also can't wait for daddy to be able to feel them.
Gender: It's a...GIRL!! We got to find out on September 3rd and it's been so fun and exciting planning and preparing for our little Isla Rose to arrive in approximately 132 short days!!
What I’m looking forward to: Feeling bigger kicks and being able to share her movement with Neil.
What I miss: Not too much at the moment, soda and coffee I guess.

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 17 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump says onion, Baby Center and What to Expect say Turnip (approx. 5 inches from crown to rump and around 5 oz.)
Total weight gain:  +5 lbs (official weight gain measured at the doctor yesterday)
Maternity clothes: About 60% maternity clothes, 40% regular new purchases
Sleep: Okay, getting up a ton for the bathroom in the night unfortunately
Best moment of the week: Hearing our baby's heartbeat at my appointment yesterday and also, I'm so happy to report that I have been off my morning sickness pills since Friday last week!! I haven't always felt great and I have been sick once in the morning most days, but I'm definitely doing better so fingers crossed it just keeps getting better!!
Food cravings: Fresh fruit, veggie sandwiches, lemonade and soda
Food aversions: Tofu
Symptoms: The usuals plus nasal congestion and at the moment, a headache
Movement: I *may* have just felt some movement!! I was sitting at my desk at work and did a big sneeze, afterward I felt a funny muscle twinge, bubbly type feeling (great description, I know haha) on the lower right side of my stomach/abdomen area. Not sure if it was just a muscle twitch but I can't say I've ever felt it before so who knows!
Gender: Down to two weeks until we know!
What I’m looking forward to: Feeling movement/being able to identify movement
What I miss: Diet soda
Next appt: September 3, 2013
Whoops...forgot to post this last week

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 16 weeks - FOUR MONTHS!
How big is baby: All sources agree this week - Avocado, 4.6 inches, 3.5 oz.
Total weight gain:  +3 lbs
Maternity clothes: Still wearing some regular shirts, leggings and shorts with a belly band but mostly maternity clothes for work since they are more comfortable while I sit at my desk all day.
Sleep: Struggling to get comfortable so far this week. My back hurts and I'm thinking about buying a maternity pillow soon.
Best moment of the week: Easing off my morning sickness pills and so far it hasn't been too bad *knock on wood*
Food cravings: Lemonade
Food aversions: None
Symptoms: No new ones to report
Movement: Nothing yet, hopefully only a couple more weeks
Gender: Three more weeks until we know!
What I’m looking forward to: Hearing the heartbeat again at my next appointment :)
What I miss: Diet coke

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 15 weeks
How big is baby: The Bump and What to Expect say navel orange and Baby Center says apple (4 inches and 2.5 ounces)
Total weight gain:  +2.5 lbs
Maternity clothes: A mix of maternity and regular, but leaning more heavily towards maternity clothes.
Sleep: Sleeping a lot, but pretty well. I just seem to be tired all the time. They say you get your energy back in the second trimester but I have yet to see mine return.
Best moment of the week: {mini-rant warning} Finding a dress to wear to a wedding that doesn't make me look huge and tent like. It might be a bit shallow but I think it's important for pregnant ladies to feel confident and good about what they are wearing. A lot of the maternity dresses are just large and muumuu like and I find the idea that you should just borrow clothes from your husband to accommodate your bump ridiculous. Just because we are pregnant doesn't mean we don't like to slip on a nice outfit and look/feel beautiful. I finally, after weeks of searching, found a dress that I feel fabulous in and can't wait to rock this week.
Food cravings: Lemonade, melon
Food aversions: Nothing I can think of
Symptoms: Pregnancy brain!! I am starting to get a bit forgetful...I forgot to put deodorant on this morning!! Don't worry, I'm going out at lunch to get some! I also forgot to put volumizer in my hair, which is no big deal but another thing I do every single day so to forget is pretty unusual. Still dealing with morning sickness and fatigue as well.
Movement: I tried to sit really still and quiet the other night to see if I could notice anything (it's still REALLY early) and I couldn't...oh well, in a few more weeks I'm sure I will start feeling her/him plenty!
Gender: 28 days until we find out!! For whatever reason, I'm starting to feel more and more like it's a little girl. I say that though and it's probably a boy :) I just always seem to picture a little girl when I think of the baby, but we'll find out soon enough. Yay!
What I’m looking forward to: Attending the wedding of two dear friends this week. There will be lots of friends from college to catch up with and I look forward to sharing the news of our pregnancy with those who don't already know.
What I miss: Not too much this week, I guess not having a foggy brain and not having to get up so many times a night for the bathroom!

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 14 weeks
How big is baby: All sources agree this week! Baby is the size of a lemon :) Roughly 3.5 inches and weighing 1.5 ounces
Total weight gain:  +1 lb (as of last week, forgot to weigh this week)
Maternity clothes: Mix of maternity and regular. I don't need everything to be maternity yet, but certain things like pants are just more comfortable with the extra room. Why suffer if I don't have to, right? I can still wear my normal pants with a belly band but the belly band doesn't always stay up well and at work it's embarrassing to have to adjust it all the time.
Sleep: Really tired this week but I've heard your energy comes back a bit in the second tri so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Best moment of the week: Touring the hospital where I'll deliver. It's a brand new hospital and it doesn't open until next week but they had an open house on Saturday so we went to check it out. It was beautiful and very high tech. Fingers crossed that we'll have a great experience there!
Food cravings: Subway meatball subs, fruit snacks, pretzels
Food aversions: Some of the things I was eating a lot of during the worst of my morning sickness. They sounded great at the time but I have a difficult time stomaching them now: bagels, sourdough bread and baked potatoes
Symptoms: Morning sickness, fatigue, post nasal drip and sinus congestion
Movement: Hopefully only about one more month until I start to feel the little one
Gender: We get to find out on September 3rd!!
What I’m looking forward to: Feeling the first movements and finding out the gender!
What I miss: Steak - I have been craving it and while I could have a well done steak, I would really love a medium steak with butter and herbs...yum yum

Weekly Pregnancy Update
How far along: 13 weeks - hooray for the second trimester!
How big is baby: What to Expect says lemon, Babycenter says peapod, The Bump says peach (about 3 inches long)
Total weight gain:  +1 lb (official weight taken at the doctor's office)
Maternity clothes: Still getting by with just a belly band for my pants. I ordered several dresses and tops from JC Penny Maternity. They were having a great sale and I found a coupon code so I got some very good deals. It's so hard to find maternity clothes for work but they had lots of good stuff and very reasonable prices. I hate spending a lot of money on clothes that I'll only wear for a few months.
Sleep: Fell asleep watching tv around 9:30 last night. Still struggling with having to get up to go to the bathroom so many times a night and starting to have trouble finding a comfortable sleeping position at night.
Best moment of the week: Hearing baby's heartbeat :) We have seen his/her heartbeat on an ultrasound before but never heard it. Incredibly wonderful to experience. A solid 140 bpm on Tuesday!
Food cravings: Lemonade/juice, pizza
Food aversions: Not at the moment
Symptoms: Still suffering from morning sickness. Tried weening myself off of my morning sickness medication since I had been doing so well, only to suffer disastrous consequences. My morning sickness is still very much present.
Movement: Nothing that I can feel yet, hopefully in a few more weeks!
Gender: The ultrasound office should be calling to schedule my 20-week any day now. We should know by early-mid September as long as the little one cooperates. Fingers crossed!
What I’m looking forward to: Feeling movement
What I miss: Soda! Been craving diet coke like crazy

Wow. It's been a LONG time

Life kind of got in the way and I have taken a very long hiatus from blogging.
The past 2-3 years have seen a lot of changes.Lots of good, a few not so good, but I'd rather not dwell on that past. Let's jump forward to today:

I have a wonderful job in higher education which I love. The people and community are amazing. We own a home back in my hometown in Oregon. We have a very sweet, although at times temperamental cat that we adopted. Two weeks ago we celebrated four amazing years of marriage. Perhaps the biggest thing going on in our lives at the moment though...WE ARE HAVING A BABY!!

As of this posting, I will be 13 weeks pregnant and officially entering my second trimester! We are overjoyed :)

That said, this blog will likely be making a significant shift and if you were a reader who enjoyed my tales of newlywed expat life, you may or may not enjoy the direction the blog moves in. I currently love reading pregnancy/family blogs and hope to chronicle a bit of my family's journey. I'm no perfect housewife or model worthy pregnant lady. I just hope to just give a glimpse into our lives, flawed and (to me) fabulous. Whether this interests you or not, this blog is as much a diary and scrapbook for me as it is hopefully a help and reassurance to others out there that might be experiencing the same things. Hope you enjoy!

This pregnancy is finally starting to feel real. For the first trimester, between just trying to function each day (my morning sickness was/is rough, I also had the usual exhaustion) and worry about something going wrong (knock on wood, so far everything is going great) I just kept focusing on getting through it. I didn't really allow myself to get overly excited because you just never know early on. I think reading too many message boards and blogs about women who had experienced problems got to me and I was afraid to fully embrace my pregnancy until the odds of something bad happening went way, way down. I was afraid I would jinx things.

Now that my second trimester is right around the corner, I'm getting very excited/nervous/overwhelmed/etc/etc :) It started to hit me yesterday when I was thinking about announcing the news on Facebook. Which led to worrying about labor/delivery to having a minor freakout during my morning commute about not knowing anything about babies. Seriously. I am so excited for ours to arrive, but I am petrified at the same time. I will be reading the books on what to do after you bring the baby home until the pages are frayed. The realization that a baby - a living, breathing human being that I am currently growing - will be in my arms in approximately six (!!) months is...well, I don't think there is a word to describe the multitude of emotions I'm feeling.

That said, this is an amazing time and I am embracing it. I have my fingers crossed that the "honeymoon trimester" really is a bit easier. I'm hoping the worst of the pregnancy symptoms will ease off and I'll have enough energy to keep my eyes open and read those baby books without passing out on the couch. I've started making a list of what we'll need, compiling freezer crockpot recipes that I can make before the baby arrives and seriously considering those paneled maternity work pants I saw online.

One (almost) down, two to go!!

How big is baby: What to Expect says Lime, Babycenter says Fig (between 1.5-2 inches long)
Total weight gain:  2 lbs
Maternity clothes: Made my first maternity purchases (jeans and a button-up top for work) this past weekend. Don't need them quiet yet, but my pants in particular are feeling snug and just a little too tight to be comfortable.
Sleep: Always tired, but waking up a lot to pee and having a hard time sleeping soundly.
Best moment of the week: Hardly throwing up at all! (knock on wood)
Food cravings: Lemonade, sushi (only veggie), soft pretzels and fruit (peaches this week)
Food aversions: Getting a lot better, food has actually been sounding good the past week or so. At the moment, nothing in particular
Symptoms: The usual...bloating, indigestion, nausea/vomiting, sore boobs

Gender: Won't know for another two months, start placing bets now! Just for fun...

What I miss: Not too much, but probably coffee and not feeling like I'm seasick all the time ;)

While I have been keeping the pregnancy a secret (mostly) until the end of the first trimester, I really love reading pregnancy blogs and especially the weekly updates from mom's to be. It's reassuring to see that other people are experiencing the same things you are. I hope to do the same and post a weekly pregnancy update. I am drafting weeks 11 and 12 as they occur, but will post them after we publicly announce the pregnancy in week 13.
